24.2The first rule: melody is always the foreground
In a solo piano ballad, there are roughly three layers:
Top
melody
Middle
harmony / inner voices
Bottom
bass
Your ear should hear them in that order.
If the inner chords are louder than the melody, the arrangement becomes cloudy.
