20.37Inversions complicate bass listening

Suppose harmony is:

C → G/B → Am

Bass:

C → B → A

If you assume bass = root, you might mistakenly call second chord B-something.

But melody/upper notes reveal G harmony.

So:

Bass note is a clue, not always the chord root.
