101.30The difference between a rule and a cliché

A rule is:

contextual and purposeful.

A cliché is:

automatic and context-insensitive.

Example:

Rule: use borrowed iv only near important return.

Cliché: put iv before every tonic.

The first shapes form.

The second weakens the gesture.
