82.119Symmetry and uncertainty

A dominant seventh is asymmetrical enough to strongly suggest:

resolution.

An augmented triad says:

several directions are plausible.

A diminished seventh says:

several leading-tone interpretations are plausible.

Whole-tone says:

direction itself is temporarily weakened.

That is the expressive power of symmetry.
