For solo choruses:

Do not improvise one lick per chord.

Try:

• one phrase extending across several harmony changes
• one answer beginning before the previous phrase fully resolves
• first chorus mostly short/sparse
• later chorus develops one motif across barlines
• begin final phrase before modulation or new chorus
• return to melody after a deliberate breath

This will make the improvisation feel connected to the tune's theatrical narrative.
