4.3Functional analysis

In C major / A minor:

Am7 = vi in C, but tonic-like i area in A minor

Dm7 = ii in C / iv in A minor

G7 = V of C

Cmaj7 = I

Fmaj7 = IV

Bm7♭5 = iiø of A minor

E7 = V of A minor

Am7 = i/vi arrival

So the phrase moves:

minor area → major cadence → IV → minor ii–V → minor return

That is a beautifully balanced harmonic arc.
