Many songs use:

one chord per bar.

Others:

two chords per bar.

Some hold one chord for several bars.

The harmonic rhythm often changes between sections.

Example:

Verse: 1 chord/bar.

Pre-chorus: 2 chords/bar.

That alone increases momentum.
