When starting an original piece:

  1. Choose center/mode.
  2. Choose meter/pulse.
  3. Choose one character constraint.
  4. Create one small seed.
  5. Identify its DNA.
  6. Make a phrase.
  7. Make an answer/variation.
  8. Reduce melody to structural notes.
  9. Write bass.
  10. Identify function/center.
  11. Write one inner line.
  12. Choose harmonic rhythm.
  13. Choose texture/register.
  14. Define larger form.
  15. Give every section a job.
  16. Compose transitions from invariants.
  17. Develop rather than constantly invent.
  18. Reserve resources for climax.
  19. Write/refine ending backward.
  20. Reduce, edit, perform, transpose, and make a flexible version.
