105.3Phrase context narrows choices
If G is:
the final note of a strongly conclusive phrase,
C may feel natural.
If G occurs while phrase wants motion:
Am7 or Fmaj9 may work.
If G begins a dominant phrase:
G7 may be obvious.
The same pitch changes meaning with function.
