  1. Reduction removes surface information to reveal the relationships actually carrying melody, harmonic direction, bass motion, rhythm, and form. It is an analytical process, not merely making the music easier.
  2. Melody + bass. If the outer voices remain coherent and cadences/direction survive, the arrangement has a strong foundation; middle voices can then be understood as clarification and color.
  3. A structural harmony establishes or changes an important functional/formal destination; a passing/color event connects, embellishes, or intensifies that structure without necessarily creating a new large-scale destination.
