Singer's repeated choruses create excellent interaction opportunities.

First:

simple two-beat.

Later:

walking.

If singer adds extra tag:

vamp.

If they delay phrase:

walking bass can continue while RH waits.

If singer builds dynamically:

save block/shout responses for gaps.

Do not cover text with your big-band simulation.
