Using a legal chart/ear-learned melody:

Before each chorus:

hear the next texture.

For example:

Chorus 1: two-beat.

Before Chorus 2 arrives:

hear walking pulse internally while still finishing Chorus 1.

Before modulation:

hear the new tonic.

Before big final blocks:

hear the top melody + bass first.

The goal is to make the evolving arrangement sound predicted rather than selected after the fact.
