96.152Mini-composition exercise
Create an 8-bar melody first, with no planned chords.
Requirements:
- mostly diatonic melody
- one long non-triad scale degree
- one chromatic approach note
- one phrase ending on tonic
- one phrase ending away from tonic
- one sustained note lasting at least a bar
Then harmonize it five times:
Version 1
tonic pedal only.
Version 2
I-IV-V.
Version 3
I-vi-ii-IV-V family.
Version 4
bass-line-first reharmonization.
Version 5
jazzier version with secondary dominant/borrowed/tritone color.
The goal is to hear:
one melody does not possess one correct chord progression.
It contains a field of harmonic possibilities.
