We have now studied three fundamentally different ways to create rhythmic sophistication:

1. Change the meter

5/4, 9/8, 6/4.

2. Change periodicity inside the meter

3-beat, 5-beat, displaced cells.

3. Keep the grid and periodicity stable but alter feel

microtiming, attack, release, articulation, layer relationship.

The third is perhaps the least visible on paper—

and often the hardest to play convincingly.
