57.2Do not begin with fancy harmony
Before touching substitutions, play the tune with:
- melody
- tonic
- IV
- dominant
- basic secondary-dominant/turnaround functions where needed
Keep it plain.
Your first task is to know:
where the melody phrases breathe and where the harmony actually needs to move.
Everything else is optional.
