48.93A useful diagnostic question

When something sounds rhythmically complicated, ask:

Did the pulse change?

Did the meter change?

Did only the grouping change?

Is there an odd-length repeating cycle?

Is the phrase simply crossing the barline?

This prevents you from treating every rhythmic surprise as “odd time.”
