Workshop 42 — “Take Five”: 5/4 Meter, Asymmetric Groove, 3+2 vs 2+3 Grouping, and Improvising Without Losing the Barline
After several groove workshops in 4/4, this is the right moment to break the meter itself.
The new problem is:
How do you make an odd meter feel natural enough that you can stop counting mechanically and actually improvise?
“Take Five” is an ideal laboratory because the harmony can remain comparatively manageable while 5/4 becomes the compositional engine.
The main lessons are:
- feeling 5/4 rather than merely counting to five
- 3+2 and 2+3 groupings
- bass ostinatos in asymmetric meter
- comping across uneven groups
- phrasing across barlines
- rhythmic displacement inside 5
- minor/modal improvisation
- distinguishing meter from phrase length
- avoiding the “1-2-3-4-5 prison”
- using odd meter to transform an ordinary melody
The central lesson is:
Odd meter stops sounding odd when you hear it as a small number of unequal large pulses rather than a long sequence of individual beats.
