31.6The trick that makes it tonal
The tune does not usually just jump:
Bmaj7 → E♭maj7 → Gmaj7.
It often inserts dominant chords that point clearly to the next tonic.
So you get something conceptually like:
tonic → dominant of distant tonic → distant tonic.
The dominant acts as a signpost.
